Armor
Armor are gear items that can be equipped to increase defense, stats and light of the player. Armor are categorized into 5 slots. Helmets, Chest Armor, Gauntlets and Leg Armor increase stats and attributes while Class Armor is merely cosmetic.
In House of Wolves, old Legendary and Exotic armor can be upgraded to the highest light and defense with the Ascend perk. Upgrading costs Etheric Light and Exotic Shard for legendary and exotic items respectively.

History
In House of Wolves, Legendary and Exotic armor can be upgraded to the highest light and defense with the Ascend perk.
House of Wolves Armor and House of Wolves Class Armor
In The Dark Below, Exotic armor from the initial release can be "updated" by Xûr. This will reset the armor to 0 XP, and increase its stats to match the current version. Doing so costs a few thousand glimmer and 1 Exotic Shard.
