General Information
Swords is a melee Heavy Weapon released in The Taken King. Swords have its own suite of stats that are different from ranged weapons. Players can not only swing the sword with R2, but also block with the sword by pressing L2.
Speculation: Blocking with the sword reduces damage taken from enemy elemental attacks (Arc, Solar and Void). It is especially effective in reducing the damage of the Damage Type that is not the same as your weapon's damage. For example, Arc Edge deals Arc damage. Blocking with it reduces Solar and Void damage more than Arc.
Speculation: Blocking drains energy, the sword's "ammunition" or resource.
