Players can obtain runes around the world of Destiny or purchase them from a "merchant". The player that sacrificed the rune will receive better rewards than other players just participating. Court of Oryx is a type of Public Event released in The Taken King. Unlike other Public Events, Court of Oryx allows the players to pick their own difficulties and summon their own bosses.
