Cryptarch, named Master Rahool, is an NPC that deciphers Engrams and turn them into weapons, armor and other items. Players can purchase Legendary Engrams from him for Legendary Marks. Legendary Helmet Engrams cost 100 Legendary Marks while other Engrams cost 60. Players can also trade consumables such as House Banner, found during various missions, for glimmer.

Year 1
In Year 1, players can spend glimmer and purchase Engrams for him to decipher. As you use the Cryptarch to decipher Engrams, players receive Crypto-Archaeology Reputation points and allow you to rank up with the faction. Achieving higher rank with the Cryptarch allows the player to purchase rarer Engrams.
Engrams of different rarity grants different amounts of Reputation points:
