General Information
Overview
Engrams are unidentified loot items randomly dropped by enemies or awarded upon completion of various activities in Destiny. Players can bring Engrams to a Cryptarch to have them deciphered and reveal their contents. Deciphering Engrams also increases the player's Crypto-Archaeology Reputation. Occasionally, Engrams will decrypt into Strange Coins or Motes of Light. With a few exceptions, Engrams adhere to the following rules when being decrypted:
Decrypting Algorithm
- Engrams will attempt to decrypt with an Attack/Defense value one to five points greater than the player's overall Light Level at the time of decryption.
- Rare engrams will decrypt with an Attack/Defense value no greater than 385.
- Legendary engrams will decrypt with an Attack/Defense value no greater than 390.
- Exotic engrams will decrypt with an Attack/Defense value no greater than 400.
- Exotic Engrams will only drop from Ultras or upon conclusion of a Crucible match, and only if a Three of Coins has been used.
- Once a player has reached character level 40, all Encrypted engrams that he/she obtains from that point forward will automatically be converted into Weapon Parts or Armor Materials.
