Legacy Engrams are Exotic Engrams introduced in The Taken King (Year 2). They can be purchased from Xur for 31 Strange Coins. Every week a Legacy engram from a new armor or weapon slot is on sale.
Legacy Engrams contain only Year 1 Exotics!
Warning
LEGACY ENGRAMS WILL ONLY DECRYPT INTO YEAR ONE EXOTICS AT 160 LIGHT.
Year one gear can NOT be infused to current light levels, ever, and legacy engrams are incredibly overpriced. This is true of all legacy engrams. They can have their light increased to 170 from 160 with an etheric light, but there is no reason to do this.
The ONLY reason to buy a legacy engram is if you want a piece of exotic Y1 gear that is no longer available in year 2/year 3 that you have never gotten before and can't just get from the blueprint (ex: pocket infinity, icebreaker, etc...). If you already had one in the past when the blueprint system went live, you can just get one from the blueprint kiosk. If you are a new/returning player without a ton of coins, this is probably not a good use of your coins anyway.
Another minor point: obtaining the Y1 version of gear also unlocks the year 2/3 version (if it exists) in the blueprint kiosk if you've never had the year 2/3 version before. This is only viable for year 2/3 gear that also existed in year one, but its a very expensive way to do this. You are probably better off just trying to obtain the year 2/3 version normally.
