Defense is a stat that reduces the incoming damage from your enemies. More Defense equals less damage you'll take from attacks. Defense is normalized (does not matter) in Crucible matches.

Details:

This is the inverse of the Attack stat. Higher Defense applies damage reduction to all incoming hits that have lower Attack stat. Again, important for PvE, Iron Banner, but useless for The Crucible. Choose your gear accordingly.
